Sock-Knitting Weather

It's hot here. It's butter melting on the counter overnight kind of "hot" here. It's, A/C kicking on at 7:30 a.m. "hot" here.Today - supposed to be even hotter. And no, we do not live in the desert. I wouldn't live in the desert. Its too blasted HOT in the desert. So anyway, sock-knitting is good summertime knitting, at least when it's so hot you can wash your comforter and hang it over the porch rail to dry kind of hot at your house. Did I mention it's hot here?

Finally, PinkSock4 is allowing progress. I'm to the toe on sock #1. And so, to use a much hackneyed phrase from Blogistan (for the first time here) ALERT THE MEDIA! For some reason, this has been one sock that resisted getting knit! It's not even a difficult pattern. I'd knit it again - if there weren't so many other wonderful patterns to chose from in MSKS. Well, actually, come to think of it, I am going to knit it again - there's still another sock to knit for a pair. I should have all the pitfalls mapped and charted by now...at least you'd think so....

One of many a few mental notes I have made on this sock I will record here (because, as we know, the ol' memory ain't what she used to be):
  • 4 dpns: One of the starts of this sock - the last one - was done on 5 dpns. I found that the pattern didn't skew quite as much though if I could put the pattern stitches (for the top of the foot) on one needle and just knit the pattern that way. The sole stitches I split over 2 dpns - and so I have become a 4 dpn sock knitter with this sock. (I guess PinkSock4 can stand for pink sock knitted on 4 dpns rather than the fact that it was ripped-out-and-started-over at least 4 times.)
  • The cuff spent most of its time on 5 dpns, and I'll likely repeat that for the second sock.
  • I want to get some solid colored sock yarn. Interestingly, the only solid colored sock I've ever made was from some corriedale that I spun - and it was just the natural "white" of the corrie. I think these stitch patterns really aren't done proper justice with the striping yarn - unless they're Jaywalkers or some other pattern that will do something interesting with the striping.
      • Just in case you haven't knit Jaywalkers and would like to know where the FREE pattern is - it's at MAG knits at http://www.magknits.com/Sept05/patterns/jaywalker.htm.
      • And a word of advice - don't question THOSE instructions either or you won't get your foot past the instep when you go to put the sock on. Do as you are told. You have been warned.
OK....off to get that toe finished and cast on and start PinkSock4(b)...may the force be with me (heaven knows the weather is)!
